Katie Wood: Positive Homebirth Experience After Switching From OB Halfway Through Pregnancy

Katie Wood, a pharmacist and fertility coach, shares her birth story on this episode! After coming off of birth control for 13 years Katie and her husband struggled to get pregnant and received no nutritional or supportive advice from her OB or midwife. She decided to start acupuncture and 3-4 months later she conceived her daughter. Her pregnancy was healthy, although she did have a couple of scares. Katie had a subchorionic hematoma that luckily self-resolved (She used Chinese herbs and healing foods). After being told her genetic testing came back clear she was contacted afterwards saying they made a mistake and she was a carrier for SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). Her husband had to get tested and it was the hardest few weeks of waiting during her pregnancy. Katie was very proactive with nutrition and lifestyle to support a healthy and vibrant pregnancy for herself and baby. They hired a doula for their desired natural childbirth in a conventional hospital setting, and about half way through her pregnancy they decided to have a homebirth instead. Listening to her intuition on that was the best decision they have ever made. It was a beautiful experience. Katie had a 20hr labor with a lot of back pain and pushed for 2.5 hours. Her postpartum was filled with lots of support from her husband, family, midwife and doula.
