Mini Episode: Chat with Karley About Her Inclusive Children’s Book: Darcy’s Differences
In honor of Disability Book Week, today’s mini episode features Karley, a previous guest on the podcast and newly published author! Disability Book Week, held on April 23-29 each year, invites individuals all over the world to become more inclusive with what they read by reading a book that features a main character with a disability.
Karley’s second daughter, Nora, was born with not one, but two rare genetic conditions: Loeys-Dietz Syndrome and Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis (OSCS). These genetics have caused hydrocephalus, club foot, hip dysplasia, sleep apnea, seizures and much more. She has 14 specialists and multiple appointments every week. During these appointments Karley started to doodle in her car. Her doodles evolved into a delightful children’s book celebrating our differences!
Follow Darcy into her classroom where her teacher and friends show her that everyone is different, no one is the same. They showcase their own differences so Darcy will understand that different is good, just sometimes misunderstood!
This book touches on different disabilities and physical features while showing children that everyone is different. It teaches young readers to love themselves and celebrate who they are.
